DVSA has published the 2025 test year. Here is what will change on this site
The 2025 files landed on 22 June 2026 with 38.1 million tests and 92.5 million defect items. Every figure here will be recomputed; this is what to expect and what will not move.
Every number on this site comes from one year of inspection records, and the year is about to change. DVSA released the 2025 test year on 22 June 2026 under the Open Government Licence: 38.1 million tests and 92.5 million individual defect items.
What moves
Cars registered in 2022 have their first test in 2025, so a whole cohort of newer electric models enters the data and some of the current 83 gain thousands of tests. Models that just missed the 100-test threshold will appear. Age curves extend by a year at the top.
What will not move
The tyre finding. It is a share of defects, not a count, and it has been stable across every cut of the data we have made. If it changes materially in 2025 we will say so, on this page.
Method note
The 2025 files use new names and the same structure. Our pipeline is public in the methodology page; the cleaning rules (duplicate rows, two fuel codes in one file, hybrids recorded as electric, commas inside model names) all still apply.

Electric cars fail their MOT on tyres twice as often as petrol cars
We matched 442,243 first-time inspections of electric cars against petrol and diesel cars of the same age. Tyres are 47.5% of everything that fails an electric car, against 23.7% on the rest of the fleet. Brakes go the other way.

49,764 inspections in a single year make the Leaf the best-documented electric car in Britain. It starts strong, then ages faster than the fleet, and the reason is suspension and rear brakes rather than anything electric.
